The Central Zoo Authority (CZA) evaluation report of the ‘makeover’ master plan
compiled by Shri S.K. Patanaik and Dr, Romel Mehta, who visited the V.J.B. Udyan
(Rani Bagh) on October 30, 2007, has been obtained by the Save Rani Bagh
Botanical Garden Acton Committee under the Right to Information Act.
Our committee met the visiting CZA team in Mumbai and apart from stressing our
firm opposition to any ‘makeover’ discussed various facets of preserving
Mumbai’s vital green lung and beautiful botanical park. The CZA report, that has
duly noted this meeting, amply vindicates our stand that the proposed
modernization poses a very grave danger to the existing tree cover.
The salient features of CZA’s report are:
If the Master Plan is implemented almost all trees, vegetation and existing
ecosystem as well as all existing structures will be destroyed.
The useable area will be drastically reduced
Existing storm water drainage will be disturbed
Modification, restructuring of existing animal enclosures rather than
creation of new ones suggested
Cost estimates and drawings are vague
